“Wolf and Young” – by Harrison Weir, is a full page book plate image, taken from “Animals and their Young”, by Harland Coultas, and published by S.W.Partridge & Co, in 1891. This extremely empathetic study of a mother Wolf and her large litter of cubs, resonates wonderfully with a mood of conservation, of a balance between fear and respect for the wild. Here we see the wolf not as a threat, but through the eyes of the naturalist, as a species like any other, caring for her vulnerable young. The rising of the soft full evening moon, helps to create an atmosphere of calm and peace, while the rendering of the wolf and cubs themselves reminds us that Weir is the master observer of all things natural, be they domestic or wild, with particular emphasis on showing us the truth. This illustration is reminiscent of a “still” shot, taken from a modern documentary. Beautifully drawn, and a superb gift for the many lover and respecter of wolves.
Prints currently available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
