1891 – Otter and Young

“Otter and Young” – by Harrison Weir, is a full page book plate image, taken from “Animals and their Young”, by Harland Coultas, and published by S.W.Partridge & Co, in 1891. This is a delightful study of an amusing and agile aquatic animal,  that is attractive, elegant and graceful in movement and in total harmony with its natural surroundings.  Otters are amazingly agile catchers of fish, and in fact, in this they are nothing short of outstanding. Tame otters have also been known to be trained to catch fish for their owners. This drawing captures a wonderful glimpse of mother otter with young, in an atmosphere of family relaxation. It is also imbued with qualities of quiet fortitude, confidence and power, of conservation, and of a balance between fear and respect for the wild. We view this seemingly calm domestic scene, through the eyes of the naturalist, interested in showing us a glimpse of the truth in nature. Likewise, reminiscent of a “still” shot, taken from a modern documentary, we get to see a moment in the life of these playful and entertaining animal characters.

Prints currently available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
