1887 – The Sailor’s Friend

“The Sailor’s Friend”, is a heart-warming full page, book plate image, taken from the ‘cover’ of the December 1888 edition, of “The Prize”. It is one of 13 chromoliths, that have been brought together in one hardbound book, comprised of all the issues from that year, to form a single Annual.  On many occasions, Harrison has illustrated dogs performing rescues at sea, but more often, using Newfoundlands as the chosen subject breed, and clearly a favourite. He was also fond of Shepherd dogs and of St.Bernards, a breed taken up and bred by a number of his personal friends. He always manages to imbue his dog images with an intangible but recognisable quality, that only a combination of empathy, knowledge  and artistic ability could possibly create. A vibrant and colourful study, this print is available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options. (The original printed image, being less than A5 in size!)
