Description

A simply amazing image, difficult to describe. It is in fact a two-page centre-spread feature entitled: “Hitting It Off : The Mid-Kent Staghounds” and is taken from the April 14th 1883 issue of “The Illustrated London News”. If anyone ever doubted Weir’s in depth knowledge and observation of the breeds, let them stop now – these dogs are rendered with amazing anatomical detail, where the artists pencil has captured sinew, muscle, tone, torque of bodies in movement, head shape and the attitude of each individual dog involved in the pursuit, all while in movement, and with a eye to perspective, composition and detail of surroundings. The “Narrative” of this piece is exemplary in its execution and a credit to both the artist Weir and the engraver, John Greenaway, both masters in their respective fields. Every now and then, Weir reminds us with a piece like this, that he IS the master of drawing animals for the wood-engraving process! (possibly at the height of his artistic career) and that wood engraving could still hold its own as a work of art, even as late as 1883. We are glad to be able to provide this image in A4, A3 and A2, sizing options, but also in a huge A1 size, for those brave enough to find room for a poster size image. Whatever the size, the artists work will not fail to amaze.
