1878 – The Wolf and the Stork

$7.00$28.00

“The Wolf and the Stork – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. Instead of an anecdote accompanying the illustration, a simple educational fable with moral is attached and reads as follows: “A bone stuck fast in a Wolf’s throat. He begged a Stork to take it out with her long bill, promising to pay her for doing so. The stork agreed. She thrust her long neck down the Wolf’s throat, and drew away the bone. Then she asked for her promised payment. ‘You must be mad,’ said the Wolf;  ‘you may be thankful that I let your neck go free.’ ….Tis thus a knave will recompense, His succourer in need: Not thanks you again, but insolence, From him for kindly  deed.”
