1878 – Sympathy

“Sympathy – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “A flock of sheep was being driven along. One poor creature was so tired that it lay down on the ground. The drover beat it with his stick, but could not make it stir. In a rage he left it, and went after the other sheep. In a few moments another flock came up, and several of the new-comers gathered round the panting sheep, and, after sundry rubbings of noses and bleatings, he rose and scampered off to join his own flock. Surely we may learn a lesson of kindness from this little story.”
