“The Shepherd’s Dog and the Lost Boy – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “A Shepherd’s child was lost among the mountains. Several days passed before he was found; but he did not starve, for his father’s dog, which was with him, went home every day, and fetched a piece of cake (his own allowance) for the child to eat. It was through this good, kind dog that the boy was found at last. The shepherd could not think where his dog took the food to, and resolved to follow him and see. He did so, and to his great joy, found his child.”
