1878 – A Sensible Dog

“A Sensible Dog – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “At a roadside inn, a weary dog fell fast asleep before the fire. While he slept, his master went out of the room. On his return, the other travellers told him that they had been much amused by his dog. When he awoke he was in great trouble at finding his master gone. Then he went round the room and smelt all the greatcoats hanging upon the wall, and when he found his master’s coat. he returned to the fireplace, and went to sleep again, as if he had thought to himself, ‘my master won’t go away without his greatcoat’. “
