1878 – A Sagacious Dog

This well-known picture, entitled “A Sagacious Dog – by Harrison Weir” has been published many times. This full-page book plate image is taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878, and is one of the clearest versions we have seen to date. The accompanying anecdote reads: “This good dog’s master lost a parcel out of his carriage, and did not miss it until he reached home. Going back to make search for the parcel, he found it lying in the road, and his faithful dog carefully guarding it. Many tales are told of dogs which have lost their lives in protecting their masters’ property.
