1878 – Old Balaclava Jack

“Old Balaclava Jack – by Harrison weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The accompanying anecdote reads as follows: “Old Jack’s master was killed at the Battle of Balaclava, and the horse was captured. One night, the English soldiers were roused by a cry of  ‘The Enemy!’  But no enemy were to be seen – only horses without riders. The mystery was explained by a trooper, who exclaimed, ‘What ho! here is Old Jack back again!’ He had managed to break his halter and take to his heels, when he was followed by the Russian horses near him. The troop gained thirty remounts through Old Jack’s fidelity to his standard.”

Prints now available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
