1878 – The Monkey and the Nuts

$7.00$28.00

“The Monkey and the Nuts – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “A Monkey had a sack fro fresh, sweet nuts. Dozens of other monkeys flocked around him, hoping to get some. But the greedy creature flung them only the empty shells of those he has cracked and eaten. This made the other monkeys very angry, and they attacked the possessor of the nuts in a great fury. He now pelted them with nuts, and soon they all ran away. But his precious nuts were gone, too. He had used them all in driving off his foes. ‘Thus oft we see a triumph cost….As much as if the day were lost.'”
