1878 – Monkey and Child

“Monkey and Child – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “A Monkey on board a ship ran away with a baby belonging to one of the passengers, and took it to the very top of the mainmast. Every one was frightened. The captain was at his wits’ end. He would not let the sailors climb after the monkey, for he feared that if they did so, it would drop the child, and escape by leaping from one mast to another. At last the captain ordered every man to hide himself below, and took a seat where he could see without being seen. To his great relief, the monkey, on finding that the coast was clear, came down, and placed the baby unhurt upon the sofa from which it has been taken.”
