“Linnet singing in the gorse – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “Let us listen to the Linnet’s song. This is what he says:- ‘Oh, I am so happy! the air is so sweet and fresh, the sky is so blue, and everything so beautiful! Trill! trill! surely there never was a happier bird than I! My mate sits on her nest in the bush beneath. In that nest are six pretty little eggs. In a few days, they will be hatched, and there will be a family of downy nestlings to look after, and I shall be, if possible, even happier that I am now’.”
