1878 – The Kingfisher

“The Kingfisher – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. Rather than the usual anecdote, in this case the illustration is accompanied by a short educational paragraph which reads as follows: “The Kingfisher is not much larger than a swallow; its shape is clumsy, its legs small, the bill long and sharp, its plumage dazzling and brilliant. As you would imagine from its name, this bird is very clever at catching fish. Darting down from the branch of a tree, it seizes its prey, and flying up again with the poor fish struggling in its bill.”

The original engraving carries plenty of detail, and is therefore available as a print in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
