“An Intelligent Dog – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, pub;ished by W.W.Gardener, circa 1878. The accompanying anecdote reads: “Monsieur N……….. wished to get rid of his dog. So one night, when he was staying at an inn, he said to the dog, ‘Tomorrow, you rascal! I shall take the train, and you will have to walk about here.’ The next morning, one of N………’s socks and his waistcoat were missing. He called the landlord, and they were all searching and wondering, when they found the dog in a corner, lying upon the missing articles. The poor animal seemed to have wished in this way to prevent his master from starting without him. N…….., admiring the sagacity of his dog, no longer tried to get rid of him.”
