“Hyena frightened by a Trumpeter – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. A popular true story, this particular scene has been drawn by Harrison Weir a number of times, with a slight variation to each picture. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “One night, at a feast near the Cape, a drunken trumpeter was carried out of doors and laid on the grass, that the air mught sober him. A Hyena came up to him, threw him on his back, and carried him off. In the meantime the musician awoke, an finding himself in such terrible danger, sounded an alarm with his trumpet, which hung at his side. The hyena was greatly frightened, and ran away as fast as he could, leaving the trumpeter, it is hoped, a ‘wiser man’ for his strange ride.”
