“Horse protecting a Dog – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “A poor dog, which had been sadly hurt by some cruel boys, limped into a stable. A young horse who lived there felt very sorry for the dog, made him a bed in a corner, and at meal-times lifted him up into the trough, and gave him some of his own bran-mash. For weeks the two friends fed together, and the invalid grew strong.”
