“The Faithful Friend – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “Does not this poor horse look disconsolate? Once he had a companion to work and to eat with him. But his friend died, and since then ‘Damon’ has been unhappy, and his master fancies he says:- ‘Nothing does me good without him, I can neither work nor eat; Bring him back, or take me to him, Master, only let us meet!’ “
