1878 – Faithful “Bronze”

“Faithful ‘Bronze’  – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “A lady sat upon a rock to read. Presently, a sailor came to her, and begged her to go and see his sick wife, who was on board a fishing-smack that lay about a mile off. The lady went, but left her dog, ‘Bronze’, behind, because his weight would have been too much for the boat. The brave fellow remained on the rock, guarding his mistress’s books, which she had left in his charge, until the tide rose, and the water swept him away. But help was at hand. The lady had sent the sailor to look after her dog. He arrived just in time to grasp ‘Bronze’s’ collar, and pull him, spent and panting, into the boat.”
