“Dog saving a Ship – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “A ship was once sailing along the coast of Florida. One night, when all were asleep except the lad at the wheel, the captain’s Dog rushed down to his master’s berth, and barked loudly. The caption thought something must be the matter, and went on deck. The dog had smelt that land was near. Right ahead was a fearful rock towards which the ship was plunging rapidly. The captain seized the helm, the ship swung round and was then saved from peril.”
