1878 – The Dead Chaffinch

“The Dead Chaffinch – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “One morning there was a great chattering of birds in the garden. And what do you think was the matter? A little chaffinch lay dead on the ground, and its mate was talking to it and hovering about it, and trying to make it get up. Poor little thing! I took it up and buried it, and then the live chaffinch flew away. Let us hope that it found some kind friend to console and comfort it, and that it did not die of sorrow.”

Prints currently available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
