“The Cowherd’s Dog  – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “Two brave dogs, belonging to a cowherd, found in the snow, a half-frozen woman, whom they revived by licking her face and hands. The herdsmen, hearing an unusual howling and whining, came to see what it was all about. They carried the poor woman to their hut, where she soon recovered.”
