1878 – Circus Horse at Astley’s


“Circus Horse at Astley’s – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The accompanying anecdote refers to another publication and quote as follows: “Captain Brown, in his Anecdotes, describes a Spanish horse that used to perform at Astley’s; This docile animal in his public performance in the amphitheatre used to ungirth his own saddle, to wash his feet in a pail of water, fetch and carry a complete tea-equipage, with other strange things, and he would even take a kettle of boiling water from off the fire.”
