“Charles, bringing his Master’s slippers – (unsigned) attributed by us to Harrison Weir, is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows: “This wonderful parrot was named ‘Charles,’ and belonged to a merchant of Amsterdam. He made himself very useful to his master – would bring him his slippers or his night-cap, and call the servant whenever she was wanted. ‘Charles’ lived to be seventy-six years old.”
