1878 – Bess and the Kitten

$7.00$28.00

“Bess and the Kitten – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “Whenever Bess the Sheep-dog came into the house, the cats set upon her, and scratched her furiously. One day, after being very badly treated, she went off with a kitten that one of them had got, and placing it between her fore-legs when she lay down, fondled it and licked it. Soon the kitten became quite attached to her, and after awhile would seldom leave her. How often others would befriend us if we would only let them!”
