1878 – “Ben” singing


“Ben singing – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, includes an equally short poem, and reads as follows:  “This is a dog which has been adopted by a ship’s crew. His name is ‘Ben,’ and he is a very clever fellow:-

‘He sings a song or opera; Will laugh by turns, or cry; And understands the bugle call, As well as you or I’. “
