“The Foal”. A full page, colour book plate image from “Harrison Weir’s Pictures of Animals” published in 1877 by The Religious Tract Society, London. A sensitive portrayal of a horse with her foal. Harrison was married to Ann Herring, the eldest daughter of John F Herring Snr, the famous painter of horses for the aristocracy. Almost the entire extended Herring family was composed of artists, including three sons, and all were heavily involved with horses, either as carriage horses, or with racing horses. So Harrison often worked with his brothers-in-law, in illustrating horse-related events. This included attending many races, such as those at Ascot and Goodwood, both for which in later years he would also design trophies. This image is currently available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
