1874 – The Poitou Donkey


“The Poitou Donkey – by Harrison Weir” is a full page book plate image, taken from the “Chatterbox Album of Animals”, published by W.W.Gardner, circa 1878. The short anecdote accompanying the illustration, reads as follows:  “This is a Poitou Donkey. It is a native of France, and of large size, with strong, thick legs, and a heavy head. Its body is covered with long, woolly hair. The Poitou Donkey sometimes measures five feet high at the shoulders. It is mostly used to draw carts. This one from which the picture is taken was exhibited at the Crystal Palace, and it cost two hundred and fifty pounds.”
