1873 – Hen feeding Pups

This amusing and charming image of a hen mothering a litter of pups and attempting to feed them comes from the November issue of “The Children’s Friend” published in 1873, by S W Partridge. It is the lead page illustration for that month, and is accompanied bu the following anecdote:  Mr Harrison Weir has sent us a beautiful drawing of a remarkable hen that he has met with at Stanmer. He states that – “The hen took up her quarters in the dog’s kennel, and, strange to say, the dog showed no signs of displeasure. When the dog had pups, the hen took to them as she would have done had they been her own chickens; she picks out the best of the food for them, and otherwise cares for them as if she were their mother.”

Prints available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
