1866 – Now, Tom, the other foot!

This charming image is a full-page book plate from “Animal Sagacity”, edited by Mrs S.C.Hall, and published by S.W.Partridge, circa 1866. It is entitled “Now, Tom, the other foot!”. The anecdote to that comes with this picture, tells of a kind and patient young driver by the name of Benjamin Smithson, who has gained the total trust and obedience of his horses. When asked by a lady who had observed him in action before, to shake hands with his horses, he obliges and first asks one to shake hands. The horse offers his right foot, and after a good shake, the driver says “Now Tom, the other?” and up went the other foot instantly. The scene is repeated successfully with the second horse. The chapter deals entirely with the kind treatment of horses and how well they respond to true care, with obedience. A delightful illustration of this true anecdote, the image is now available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
