This image, a roughly half page feature illustration from the September 12th 1863 edition of “The Illustrated London News”, arrived into our collection the same week as an ‘autograph letter’ under the hand of Harrison Weir. In the letter, he craves the indulgence of a publisher and promises to produce a number of drawings over a period of days and excuses himself for taking a few days off to attend the Calder Vale Agricultural Association show, where he observed the Hunters being judged. The illustration is proof that he did preliminary sketches there of the judging, intended for the Illustrated London News, while happily socializing with the organizers! He also took a train ride back from Yorkshire, and hired a Hunter to ride the final leg back to Peckham in London, catching a cold in the process…. The letter illuminates us as to his social wanderings, and his faithful work ethic, in making up for lost time. The illustration shows us that no matter where he was, he was mindful of a drawing and a story that could be had. In the details provided below, we find his mark “H.Weir 1863” tucked into the left side of the pic, under a crowd of observers.
Prints available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
