The full caption for this full-page feature image is ” Going to the Christmas Party – by Harrison Weir”, giving very clear and concise accreditation to the artist in the caption, as well as his signature appearing in plate, dropped into the snow at the base of the drawing. It appears in the December 24th, 1859 edition of “The Illustrated London News”. Just as today we would be told through the media about possible car jams and hazzards to avoid with travelling at Christmas, this image was a timely reminder that there would be many horse and sled teams about, taking families to their loved ones, even in the blizzardy conditions of a deep English winter. Once again, Harrison draws our attention to the animals, the dogs enjoying the run with the family, chasing the birds from the path and the other horses carrying luggage, presents and additional family members.
This version has been delightfully hand-coloured, whether for one of the editions only, (town or country), or a single one -off, we do not know. This full page historic seasonal image is currently available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
