1858 – The Christmas Carol Singer

$10.00$40.00

The singing of this Robin in Winter has truly reverberated down through time. This colour painting by Harrison Weir, caught the imagination of Herbert Ingram, founder and owner of “The Illustrated London News”. He convinced Weir to sell him the copyright to it for 150 pounds, (a very generous sum for 1858!) and he then used it as a full page colour supplement in the Christmas Number of the Illustrated London News, starting a new tradition of a full colour plate in the Christmas Number from that year forward. The exercise proved popular and was just another example of the genius of Herbert Ingram in promoting his already successful Newspaper venture.  For Harrison Weir, it was another triumph and the beginning of a string of follow-on works to appear in colour in the Illustrated London News.  Currently available in A4, A3 and an impressive A2 size option, showing all the foibles of early colour printing in these still early days of the developing process.
