Here we have a classic early piece by Harrison Weir in his capacity as a ‘reporter-illustrator’ with this image entitled, “Meet of Her Majesty’s Buckhounds, at Salt Hill”. Earlier meets such as this, had previously been illustrated by Duncan, but now Weir was getting an opportunity to show his capabilities and his already advanced exposure to and knowledge of horses is already beginning to show! This roughly half-page feature image is taken from the November 6th, 1847 edition of “The Illustrated London News”. Weir’s firstborn, a son named Arthur Herriing Weir had been born March 8th 1847, so was approx 8 months old at the time this image was published. Weir was now earnestly seeking a career and a steady source of income to support his growing family. He always valued work, and this can be seen by the added value and effort which is evident in his drawings. About this time he took on work illustrating in colour for the “Green’s Nursery Annual” keen to make the most of any opportunity to advance his career and his prospects.
This image of Her Majesty’s Buckhounds is currently available in A4, A3 and A2 sizing options.
